James & Eloise at Cooling Castle Barn
Some days just feel right from the start, and James & Eloise’s wedding at Cooling Castle Barn was exactly that. The atmosphere was relaxed, everyone was smiling, and there was a real sense of two families coming together.
A little side note that made this wedding extra memorable for me: the groom, James Gillingham, shares his name with my best friend. It sparked a running joke from our very first Teams call and came up a few more times along the way – always good for a laugh and a double-take whenever I checked my notes.
The Ceremony
The morning was full of quiet excitement as James and Eloise got ready at the barn. When it came time for the ceremony, their vows were honest and heartfelt – promises to look after each other, to be patient, and to keep laughing together, whatever life brings.
Family & Friends
After the ceremony, it was all about celebrating with the people who matter most. Eloise’s dad spoke about her kindness and strength, and shared how proud he is of the woman – and mum – she’s become. There were plenty of thanks for friends and family who’d travelled from near and far, and a special mention for their son Elijah.
James’s speech was a mix of gratitude, humour, and a few classic stories. He spoke about how much Eloise and Elijah mean to him, and how lucky he feels to have them by his side.
The Best Man’s Speech
Then it was time for George, the best man, who managed to strike the perfect balance between playful teasing and genuine affection. George’s speech had everyone laughing from the start, with tales of university antics, legendary flatulence, and some truly memorable childhood stories (there was even a bit about spinach and pizza that got a big reaction). He poked fun at James’s quirks and habits, but always with warmth and obvious respect.
But what really stood out was how George wrapped things up – moving from laughter to something much more heartfelt. He spoke about James’s loyalty, his kindness, and the way he cares for those around him. He finished with a line from James’s niece, Penelope: “I love him to the moon and back. He’s the best.” It was the kind of speech that left everyone smiling, and maybe a little misty-eyed too.
The Rest of the Day
The rest of the day was filled with fun and joy – exactly what James & Eloise had hoped for – good food, hugs all round, and the kind of conversations that only happen when everyone’s in the same place. It was also a pleasure, as always, to work alongside Nicola Tulip on photography; Nicola’s a good friend and someone I team up with regularly at Cooling Castle Barn and other venues. Having her there always makes the day even smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.
One of our favourite moments came just before we packed up for the night. Eloise slipped away for a quick outfit change, reappearing in a smaller dress that was perfect for dancing and letting loose. As “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” kicked in, she hit the dance floor ready to party – ending the day on a real high.
Looking Back
Weddings like this are a reminder that it’s the little moments that matter most – the laughter, the stories, the hugs, and the people who make you feel at home. James & Eloise’s day was full of those moments, and it was a privilege to capture them.
