Cooling Castle Barn – A Venue Full of Character
Set beside the historic ruins of a 14th-century castle, Cooling Castle Barn blends heritage, atmosphere, and practicality to create one of Kent’s most distinctive wedding venues. With its combination of historic stonework, rustic barns, and beautifully maintained lawns, it offers a wide variety of spaces – each with its own character and feel.
The venue is made up of three beautifully restored barns:
The Heritage Barn – where guests are welcomed and can mingle before the ceremony
The Fathom Barn – typically used for wedding ceremonies
The Tithe Barn – home to wedding breakfasts, speeches, and evening celebrations
One of the things couples love most about Cooling Castle Barn is how naturally the day flows between these spaces. Guests move effortlessly from one part of the venue to the next, and the day never feels confined to a single room.
Ceremony Options at Cooling Castle Barn
Ceremonies can take place either outdoors within the castle grounds or indoors inside the Fathom Barn, and both options work beautifully.
Outdoor ceremonies take place at the far end of the long garden walkway, surrounded by historic stone buildings, hanging baskets, and landscaped lawns. The walk down the garden creates a wonderfully natural bridal entrance, with guests already gathered ahead and plenty of space for the moment to breathe and unfold naturally.
Indoor ceremonies in the Fathom Barn feature a dramatic staircase entrance, with the bride descending to meet their partner before exchanging vows on a raised platform. The proportions, height, and soft natural light in this space make it particularly strong for both photography and wedding films.

Cooling Castle Barn at a Glance
Cooling Castle Barn is an exclusive, sole-use barn wedding venue in the village of Cooling, near Rochester in Kent. Set beside the ruins of the 14th-century Cooling Castle and its striking flint gatehouse, it brings together beautifully restored timber-framed barns, walled gardens and open lawns to create one of the county's most characterful wedding venues. The venue welcomes up to around 160 guests for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, and up to 250 for the evening celebration, with on-site accommodation so your closest guests can stay over. As a recommended supplier filming here since 2016, we know the spaces, the light and the rhythm of the day at Cooling Castle Barn inside out.
Getting Ready at Cooling Castle Barn
Cooling Castle Barn suits couples who want a relaxed, unhurried wedding morning without travelling between locations. Preparations often take place on site at The Moat House, a private space within the grounds that gives the bridal party room to spread out as the day begins.
Because the morning happens at the venue, the day stays calm and connected. From a wedding videographer perspective, it lets us tell the full story from the very start, capturing the quiet, emotional moments alongside the excitement and energy of getting ready, all set against the character of the castle grounds.
Reception Drinks, Confetti and Garden Moments
After the ceremony, guests spill out into the castle grounds for drinks, congratulations and relaxed mingling. The long garden walkway, the landscaped lawns and the backdrop of the ancient flint gatehouse give these moments a real sense of place.
From confetti walks and group hugs to candid conversations and couple portraits, these in-between moments often become some of the most meaningful parts of a wedding video. The variety of outdoor space at Cooling Castle Barn gives them room to unfold naturally, with several striking backdrops within a few steps of one another.
Wedding Breakfast and Speeches in the Tithe Barn
Wedding breakfasts and speeches are usually held in the Tithe Barn, a beautifully restored space that feels warm and characterful without being overwhelming. The exposed timber, the soft natural light and the generous proportions create an atmosphere where reactions, laughter and genuine emotion can be captured honestly.
The layout works particularly well for filming speeches. It lets us move discreetly and cover both the speakers and the reactions around the room, without ever interrupting the flow of the day.
Evening Celebrations
As the day moves into the evening, the Tithe Barn takes on a different energy. The space transforms for dancing and celebration, while guests drift between the dancefloor, the bar and the quieter corners of the venue and grounds.
This variety is ideal for filming. It lets us capture the energy of the first dance and the dancefloor alongside the calmer, more intimate moments that couples often treasure just as much, with the lit gatehouse and barns making a memorable backdrop after dark.

There truly are not enough words to describe how incredible Ryan and Talking Fly are! For two people who aren't the most comfortable on camera Ryan made us both feel so comfortable through the entire day. We have just received the trailer and full film and we are both absolutely blown away! It is absolutely unreal. Ryan captured our day better than we could have ever imagined. The way he edited my morning video together with the wedding video was seamless and it just kept getting better and better. Ryan, thank you so much for what you did for us and for giving us memories that will last a lifetime. We could not have asked for more. For anyone reading this wondering whether to book Talking Fly or not, please do not hesitate, just book them! Thanks again!
Ryan at Talking Fly was recommended to us by family members who used him previously for their weddings - after seeing how wonderful the videos came out we had no doubts on whether to use him for our wedding in September. The booking process was so easy and professional, and in the run up to the wedding he regularly would check back in to confirm timings etc, and really made the planning process much easier and stress-free. Our honest review of Ryan is that he is truly the best in the business. On the day, he was so warm, fun and easy going! We have never been in front of a camera so wasn't sure on how we would feel, but after 5 minutes you either didn't know he was there, or felt as though you were sharing the space with a friend. He took all our ideas on board and the videos came out better than expected. We booked for a: 1 minute Instagram reel, 3 minute video, then a 1.5 hour documentary. We are so pleased we picked this package as we now get to watch back so many elements of the day, and get to relive them whenever we want. Everything about the video is perfect. The quality of it is second to none and we would whole-heartedly recommend him to anyone. Thank you again, Alice & Chay xxx
Our wedding video is everything we had dreamed of having! Ryan and his colleague captured every moment of our day which we got to re-live all over again. Ryan helped us feel so comfortable in front of the camera during our wedding day. But not only being amazing on the day, all the in between Ryan always kept us updated before and after the wedding, the editing process to the full edit we were kept in the loop throughout. Ryan is fantastic and i would recommend him to everyone. We can’t wait to show everyone our videos and re watch them every year! Thank you so much Ryan! From Amy and Joe xx
